About

Cressida Brown read English at UCL and is the Artistic Director of site-specific theatre company Offstage Theatre (www.offstage.org.uk) whose work has been covered by Channel 4 News, ITN, BBC London TV and radio and most national and some international papers.

Her most recent production AMPHIBIANS (patrons Sir Patrick Stewart and Olympian Mark Foster) was based on the interviews she conducted with former Olympic swimmers and staged in the derelict pool previously hidden under the Bridewell Theatre’s stage. It was nominated for 6 Offwestend Awards and received worldwide press coverage including Time Out Critic's Choice.

Please go to the link http://vimeo.com/14393109 (password: offstage theatre) to watch TV footage of her first maiden Offstage project HOME which was staged in the vacated St Catherine's Tower soon to be demolished on the Beaumont Estate based on interviews with former residents.

In 2007 she was awarded the National Theatre Studio's Bulldog Prinsep bursary for her promenade version of Racine’s PHAEDRE which was staged everywhere from dungeons to rooftops around the ruins of Craigmillar Castle at sunset in Edinburgh (Highly Recommended by the Scotsman, and nominated with 5 stars for Three Weeks Editor award).

She directed her own promenade version of Stoppard's ROSENCRANTZ AND GUILDENSTERN ARE DEAD in association with the Royal Shakespeare Company, which took place around the backstage, passages and foyer bars of the West End Novello theatre as if HAMLET was being performed on stage.

As part of a bursary from the Centre of Excellence for Theatre and Training Fellowship Cressida devised a piece called SCUM based on THE THREEPENNY OPERA at Trinity Buoy Wharf - the home of London's only lighthouse.

Next Cressida is collaborating with neuroscientists on her next site specific project.

Other work includes Matt Hartley's Sentenced at the Union Theatre (Time Out Critic's Choice), and a premiere of Dennis Kelly’s THINGS THAT MAKE NO SENSE at the Southwark Vaults which transferred to the Soho Theatre and then Latitude.

She was Associate Director for Tamara Harvey on the Union's Terror season and has been Assistant Director for John Fulljames for co-production for the Young Vic and Royal Opera House on Broadway NY, and for Nicolas Kent on the British premiere of DOUBT at the Tricycle.  She was Assistant Director for Gregory Doran on the RSC's LOVE'S LABOUR'S LOST, A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM, and HAMLET. During David Tennant’s HAMLET two of the actors were awarded the Ian Charleston Prize, not for their principal but understudy roles.
