As a theatre director, a writer and translator, Gerald Garutti has worked on multi-Awarded plays in France and in the UK. He studied literature (École Normale Supérieure and agrégation de lettres modernes), political science (Sciences Po Paris) and philosophy (Cambridge University, where he taught as lecteur of French at Trinity College). He works in English and in French.

His last credits in France include: Brief Praise of Night with Pierre Richard, which had a sold out and extended run at Théâtre du Rond-Point by the Champs-Elysées, after it toured in France, Belgium, Swiss and Luxemburg; a very edgy Richard III, which he directed and re-translated; Lorenzaccio, a Shakespearian, political epic involving thirty actors on stage (National Theatre La Criée, Théâtre Montansier at Versailles). His play Haim – In The Light Of A Violin, which he wrote and directed, has been on a enthusiastically acclaimed National Tour for four seasons before coming to The Print Room. Previously, he has written, adapted and directed, in French, a dozen of texts, including Badly But Quickly (Odéon), The Hunters Of The Absolute (France Culture), A Century of Fury (Brangues) and The Sense of Desire (National Theatre, Odéon), Espace Cardin). Since 2013, he has been creating most of his plays at the Ferme des Jeux (Ile-de-France), where he is resident theatre director.

In English, he has directed Roberto Zucco (ADC Theatre), Richard III (ADC Theatre), The Fall Of The House Of Usher (Vingtième Théâtre), a script-in-hand performance of Dangerous Liaisons by Christopher Hampton at the Royal Shakespeare Company (Stratford-upon-Avon), and Notes From Underground adapted from Dostoyewsky with Harry Lloyd, which opened The Print Room at the Coronet. From 2006 to 2011, he was the dramaturge and literary adviser of the French National Theatre (Théâtre National Populaire), on about fifteen multi-Awarded plays, such as Coriolanus (3 Molière Awards including Best Show and Best Directing and Grand Prix du Syndicat de la Critique), Overboard (Théâtre National de la Colline, Molière Award for Best Show and Grand Prix du Syndicat de la Critique), Philoctetes (Odéon-Théâtre de l’Europe, Molière Award).

He has published many articles, two plays and a book on Franz Kafka and Orson Welles. He has translated, amongst others, Stoppard’s The Coast of Utopia and Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are dead, The Power of Yes by David Hare (for the Théâtre de la Ville - France Culture), and Songs by Bertolt Brecht (for the French National Theatre La Colline). Some of his works and texts are available online at www.geraldgarutti.com.
