John Constable is a Southwark-based playwright, poet and performer, with wide experience of directing community drama projects.

Born Shropshire. Educated Oswestry School, Queens' College Cambridge, BA; MA. As a student, he acted with the Mummers at the Young Vic, and devised work for David Medalla's ARTISTS FOR DEMOCRACY.

John taught English as a Foreign Language in Berlin and Japan, and has also travelled extensively in South East Asia and South America. He toured Europe with the street-theatre group Sheer Madness - devising and performing in 'Shakespeare's Greatest Hits '- and with the Amsterdam-based theatre group Kaktus.

John's Solo work includes 'I Was An Alien Sex God' (Edinburgh Fringe, BAC, Grahamstown Festival, South Africa) and 'Raingods Become Me' (BAC). As the performance poet, John Crow, he has headlined at many poetry venues, clubs and festivals, and has hosted 'The Palace of Wisdom' an all-night performance poetry tent. John Crow is also widely known for his shamanistic performances at the Cross Bones graveyard, Southwark, including the annual 'Halloween of Crossbones'.


Much of John's work is focused on his south London neighbourhood. He has featured in a number of radio and TV documentaries about the area, including Radio 4's 'Cathedral City', the BBC's 'History Fix' with Rory McGrath, and the recent LWT documentary 'The Borough'. He also conducts unusual guided walks, including tours of Southwark's medieval Liberty of the Clink.

John Constable's 'Sha-Manic Plays' and 'Secret Bankside - Walks in The Outlaw Borough' are all published by Oberon Books. An Arts Council residency produced his prose-poem 'Winchester Cathedral - Time Out Of Mind', published by archiTEXTS: www.art-architecture.co.uk/architexts/?location_id=21
