Jyll Bradley is an artist and writer. She trained in Fine Art at Goldsmith’s College and The Slade. Her award-winning work for BBC radio includes original dramas such as FILET DE SOLE VERONIQUE (Winner of the European Broadcasting Union Award 1998 – Best Script) and GIRL, WATCHING as well as the popular comedy series JUST PLAIN GARDENING which ran for two series and starred Celia Imrie. Many of her works for radio have been praised for bringing to light hidden histories, especially relating to women. Bradley was the first to dramatise THE AWAKENING by American writer Kate Chopin thus marking the centenary of its controversial publication. She has also made documentaries on Eliza Acton regarded as the ‘finest cookery writer in the English language’ whose reputation was eclipsed by Mrs Beeton (BEFORE BEETON – THE ELIZA ACTON STORY). Her documentary A LIFE IN FLOWERS was a long overdue appraisal of Julia Clements who championed flower arranging post WWII as a way of bringing women together. All of Bradley’s radio works have been produced by award-winning producer Jonquil Panting. As an artist Jyll Bradley’s work has featured in numerous exhibition both in the UK and abroad including The British Art Show (Hayward Gallery and tour), Maureen Paley Interim Art, Newlyn Art Gallery, the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, Museo D’Antioquia, Medellin, Colombia and Vitamin Creative Space, Guangzhou (as part of the British Council’s exchange programme). Bradley has undertaken many large-scale commissions in recent years including projects for the re-opening of The Arnolfini in Bristol in 2005 and as part of Liverpool’s year as European Capital of Culture 2008. During this time she created her celebrated artist’s book MR ROSCOE’S GARDEN – an artist’s reflection on Liverpool’s historic but neglected Botanical Collection. Bradley returns to Liverpool in February 2011 for a major survey show of her 20 year art practice. This exhibition, AIRPORTS FOR THE LIGHTS, SHADOWS AND PARTICLES, will be held at the Bluecoat and a catalogue of the show will be published in March 2011. FLOWER TRAIN a film by The Guardian Online inspired by a recent work of the same name by Bradley will be launched on the paper’s website at the end of February 2011. Jyll Bradley’s future projects include a major new work for Canberra, Australia as part of the city’s centenary celebrations in 2013. As part of her commission she will be making a suite of new radio works exploring the city’s life through its historic trees and tree-scapes. |
