BLACK DEATH out in cinemas June 11th

BLACK DEATH, directed by Christopher Smith and starring Eddie Redmayne, Sean Bean, Carice van Houten, and Emun Elliott, is out in the UK on 11 June 2010.

Set during the time of the first outbreak of bubonic plague in England, a
young monk has to learn the truth about reports of people
being brought back to life, a mission that pulls him toward a village
ruler who has made a dark pact with evil forces.

Telegraph (****):

"There aren’t many British horror films you could call Bergmanesque with
even
slim justification, but Christopher Smith’s Black Death is out of the
ordinary ... Smith springs a savage battle of creeds on us
with flinty assurance, engaging smartly with the tradition of cultish
classics in this field, particularly Michael Reeves’s immortal
Witchfinder
General. The coda to this grisly fable sends you out spooked and
impressed –
it’s strong meat, and it works."

Time Out (****):

"... Christopher Smith's best film to date ... [It] marks Smith out as Britain’s most
talented ... genre filmmaker. Striking visuals, confident
storytelling, authentically grubby settings and an unsettling moral
relativism combine to make his fourth feature emotionally involving,
action-packed and thought-provoking."

Screen:

"Christopher Smith's chilling and gritty medieval horror-drama is an impressively staged film ... confirming the British director as a talent to keep on watching."
