Philip Ziegler awarded ELIZABETH LONGFORD PRIZE

Edward Heath by Philip Ziegler has won the 2011 Elizabeth Longford Prize for Historical Biography which was awarded on 14th June.

Philip Ziegler is one of Britain's most distinguished biographers and historians. His works include biographies of Diana Cooper, Lord Melbourne, Edward VIII, Mountbatten, Harold Wilson, Osbert Sitwell and Edward Heath.  He is represented at United Agents by Caroline Dawnay.

Edward Heath: The Authorised Biography (HarperCollins, 2010, £30) captures the political drama of the 1970s, so relevant for today.  With exclusive access to personal papers unavailable to previous biographers Philip Ziegler presents the first fully rounded portrait of our most enigmatic former prime minister.

Reviews for Edward Heath:

“brilliant and timely… Ziegler unsparingly shows the tragic dimension of Heath’s story” and “writes the story like a good novelist, and as readable” William Waldegrave, Spectator

“characteristically scrupulous, elegantly composed and impeccably judicious” Independent

“beautifully done, presenting a picture of a modern King Lear thwarted and humiliated by his inability to influence events” Sunday Telegraph

“elegant, compelling and devastating” Sunday Times

“as gripping as a tragic novel, with all the comical inevitability of a cautionary tale”.  Mail on Sunday
