Jim Field Smith's BUTTER wows at Telluride

Debuting in an official sneak peak at the Telluride Film Festival before its gala screening at Toronto next week, director Jim Field Smith's BUTTER brought down the packed house at the Galaxy Theatre in Telluride. Starring Jennifer Garner, Hugh Jackman, and Alicia Silverstone, the small-town butter-carving satire "garnered" rave reviews, drawing critical comparisons to Alexander Payne's ELECTION.

Comments from DEADLINE post-screening:

Just saw it last night up here in Telluride. The movie was better than these reviews and these reviews are great. Best movie in Telluride by far. Great cast, amazing script and this Jim Field Smith director is really going to blow up off of this. Very very impressed. It’s up there with ELECTION.

I was at the 1st screening for this gem last night. It really is as good as ELECTION. The director, Jim Field Smith, gave a great speech and followed it up with by far the best film of the festival so far. I expect big things for him in the future. Very well made movie.

Fantastic film and the directing is superb. Really surprised by how good Garner was, I think she may be an award contender.

VARIETY:

Not since "Last Tango in Paris" has butter been so subversive onscreen as it is in the hypocrisy-skewering, dairy-carving comedy "Butter," a wicked Midwest satire with razor blades stashed beneath its bright candy-apple surface ... Pulling all these disparate tones together is young British director Jim Field Smith, whose second feature (after "She's Out of My League") looks more polished than most studio comedies.
