THE RESISTIBLE RISE OF ARTURO UI at Liverpool Playhouse

Bertolt Brecht’s satirical play, THE RESISTIBLE RISE OF ARTURO UI, has opened at the Liverpool Playhouse in a new translation by Stephen Sharkey, with designs by Ti Green, lighting by Mike Gunning and movement direction by Carolina Valdés.

The production, which has received some wonderful reviews, plays at the Liverpool Playhouse until Saturday 22nd October before transferring to the Nottingham Playhouse for a run from Wednesday 26th October to Saturday 12th November.

Stephen Sharkey's new translation is stiletto-sharp.

Stephen Sharkey's pacey new translation.

Ti Green's design proves suitably alienating and uncomfortably contemporary.

Liverpool writer Stephen Sharkey has translated Bertolt Brecht’s poignant 1941 parable that ridicules Hitler’s exponential rise to power. It was a task he clearly relished, for here is a script full of dark wit, sheer malevolence and the striking consequences of complicity where fascism is threatened... Sharkey’s entertaining translation.

Ti Green has designed a slick set, among the best I’ve seen anywhere for depth, changeability and using multimedia in a way that doesn’t feel naff.

Mike Gunning has had his work cut out as lighting designer. With one bulb he created an enormous shadowy impression of Ui’s silhouette that would haunt the audience on the cusp of the interval.
Liverpool Confidential 9/10

Venomous satire and machine gun rattle of dialogue, brought vividly to life in what is wham, bam stylised storytelling from Sharkey.
