THE RIOTS plays at the Tricycle

THE RIOTS, a new verbatim theatre piece recounting experiences of the August riots has opened at the Tricycle Theatre to a sell-out run in a production directed by Nicolas Kent (the theatre's outgoing Artistic Director), designed by Polly Sullivan and with a cast including Okezie Morro.

The spoken evidence has been compiled and edited by Gillian Slovo based on interviews she conducted (assisted by Cressida Brown) with those directly involved.

Nicolas Kent’s well-ordered production offers information and provokes debate.
Guardian ****

In the best traditions of the tribunals that he has pioneered at the theatre, Nicolas Kent stages the speeches with a patient confidence and with acting of unmatched transparency.  The tension is, as a consequence, greater.  The result is vital.
Observer

A thought provoking and admirably even-handed play on the subject.
Telegraph ****

Not for the first time, the Tricycle Theatre has stepped in where the authorities feared to tread.
Independent

Nicolas Kent’s production is panoramic and has some striking performances.
Evening Standard ****

Kent has assembled a fine cast.

The design by Polly Sullivan uses riot shields and animated maps, bursts of onstage fire and video footage to recreate the mayhem.

The show will be playing until 10th December, but is now sold out save for an extra performance on Thursday 8th December which has been added, tickets for which can be booked here.
