THE TROJAN WOMEN at the Gate

Christopher Haydon’s production of Caroline Bird’s new version of Euripides’ THE TROJAN WOMAN is now playing at the Gate Theatre (where Christopher is Artistic Director) with a cast that includes Louise Brealey and Dearbhla Molloy, and has received rave reviews.

The war is over.  Beyond the prison walls, Troy and its people burn.

Inside the prison, the city’s captive women await their fate.  Stalking the antiseptic confines of its mother and baby unit is Hecuba, the fallen Trojan queen.  But her grief at what has been before will soon be drowned out by the horror of what is to come, as the Greek lust for vengeance consumes everything – man, woman and baby – in its path.

The reviews say:-
Dearbhla Molloy’s outstanding turn, is vicious, even in desperate captivity … Louise Brealey plays three regal young women with distinction. Christopher Haydon directs a visceral production
Evening Standard ****

Christopher Haydon's highly intelligent production … The production brilliantly captures the awful banality of horror … Louise Brealey is cleverly cast as Cassandra, Andromache and Helen, evoking the faceless everywomen who are always the victims of war
Time Out ****

an electrifying Louise Brealey … inhabits the trio with ferocious intensity.
Times ****

In Christopher Haydon’s taut production, the evening feels unsafe, like juggling with razors.
Sunday Times ****

Haydon's production has an in-yer-face directness in this intimate space, and the acting is first-rate. Dearbhla Molloy as Hecuba brings out the snottiness as well as the sadness of a former queen unable to adjust to her surroundings … Louise Brealey pulls off a remarkable treble by playing the mad Cassandra, the anguished Andromache and the devious Helen, who blames her infidelity on Aphrodite
Guardian ***

Dearbhla Molloy is fantastic as the care-worn but still combative Hecuba … And hats off to a versatile and at points nubile Louise Brealey in a triple-rash of roles
Telegraph ***

The production will play at the Gate until Saturday 15th September and tickets can be bought here.
