THE AMERICAN PLAN kicks off Bath's UK Premiere of US plays

THE AMERICAN PLAN by Richard Greenberg opens Bath Theatre Royal's Ustinov Studio British premiere season of US plays.

Directed by David Grindley with sound design by Gregory Clarke, THE AMERICAN PLAN was written in 1990.    Lili, who stands to inherit a great deal of money from her father's Estate, seeks to escape the suffocating control her German-Jewish mother (Diana Quick) cannot stop herself from exerting.

...David Grindley's production is perfectly cast............. combining a study of sex, class and the insulating effect of wealth, Greenberg's play not only gets the Ustinov's American season off to fine start, it also cries out to transfer immediately ..................    Michael Billington The Guardian *****

....Set in the 50s Greenberg unpicks the promise of post-war plenty, detailing a world so tightly regimented it makes few allowances for more sexual forms of human appetite .........   Dominic Cavendish The Telegraph ****

...David Grindley's fine production delicately brings out one of the main themes: how love, whether erotic or familial, is destroyed by lies ....................   Clare Brennan The Observer

...What generates tension is that you can't trust any of Greenberg's characters to speak the truth ....................... Kate Bassett Independent ***
