AMERICAN PSYCHO: The Musical opens to rave reviews

The jury is in and AMERICAN PSYCHO: The Musical is a critical hit. Directed by  Rupert Goold and starring soon-to-be ex-Dr Who star Matt Smith, the show opened last night at the Almeida Theatre to universally rave reviews. Based on the novel by Bret Easton Ellis, the show charts the exploits of psychopathic serial-killing Wall Street Banker, Patrick Bateman, and is held up as a gritty, deadpan satire on 90’s capitalist extremism. The book is penned by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, with songs by Duncan Sheik, the acclaimed composer of Spring Awakening. The cast also includes UA’s Simon Gregor.

The show will run until Saturday, 1st February 2014.

“Rupert Goold’s dazzling production proves to be a darkly funny, outrageously entertaining evening that boasts a star turn from Matt Smith” ***** (The Times, Dominic Maxwell)

“This show is a stylish feast.... As the vain mass murderer of Manhattan - a role light years from Doctor Who – Smith kills it.” ***** (Daily Mirror, Steve Myall)

“It sounds improbable: a musical thriller about a serial killer...(but) it works superbly thanks to Rupert Goold's stylish production, Duncan Sheik's music and lyrics and Matt Smith’s beautifully defined performance as the deluded hero” **** (Guardian, Michael Billington)

“ (A) diabolically slick production” **** (Independent, Paul Taylor)
