Richard Armitage opens to rave reviews for THE CRUCIBLE
Richard Armitage (represented by United Agents) has opened to glowing reviews in his lead role as John Proctor in Arthur Miller’s essential American drama ‘The Crucible’, currently playing at The Old Vic Theatre.
Arthur Miller’s iconic play has been vividly brought to life in a visceral new production by internationally acclaimed director Yaël Farber, where Richard Armitage portrays the forthright yet tortured protagonist John Proctor, amidst a storm of false accusations, religious fundamentalism, witchcraft and sexual desire.
The Arts Desk showered the production with praise, enthusing: “Armitage makes a fine job of John Proctor – a roaring, contrarian beast of a man who shouts because he cannot be heard” whilst The Telegraph applauds: “[he] proves an exhilarating stage actor, with blazing eyes and a righteous fury about him, as well as his manifest decency. His deep guilt about his brief affair with Abigail is powerfully caught, and his final reconciliation with his wife, beautifully played by Anna Madeley, who admits her own part in their troubles, proves extraordinarily intimate and moving.”
Richard Armitage’s film and television credits include the forthcoming motion picture ‘Into the Storm’ as well as ‘The Hobbit’ trilogy, ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’ and ‘Spooks’. Theatre credits include ‘The Duchess of Malfi’ and ‘Macbeth’ for the RSC.
Arthur Miller is one of America’s most prolific and influential playwrights. His plays include ‘All My Sons’, ‘Death of a Salesman’ and ‘A View from the Bridge’.
The Crucible also features Christopher Godwin – who plays Judge Hathorne.
