OCTOBER 2010 saw the publication of SIMON'S CAT: BEYOND THE FENCE

Simon Tofield has been working as a 2D animator and designer for over ten years, freelancing for many leading studios before joining the roster of represented directors at TANDEM in 2006.

As a commercial director at TANDEM, he has worked on a diverse range of high-profile productions, including advertising campaigns for Marmite ‘Paddington Bear’ (DDB London), Singapore Zoo campaign (Saatchi&Saatchi Singapore), Microsoft ‘Rugby’ (McCann Erickson London) and UNEP (McCann Erickson London).

As an animator, Simon developed his distinctive approach to character-based, observational comedy while working with TANDEM co-founder and Oscar-winning director, Daniel Greaves ('Manipulation', 'Flatworld'). Simon animated the characters in Daniel’s BAFTA-nominated 'Flatworld' and BAFTA-nominated 'Little Things' short films. On 'Flatworld', Simon designed and animated many characters but his trademark was the cat character, Jeff.

Having joined TANDEM as a represented director, Simon experimented with the animation software Flash, developing an unusual technique by drawing on the digital tablet in a freehand way and creating the animation with a flowing, 'straight-ahead' approach (much as one would create a flip-book). He completed several tests with Flash, one of which became a film, 'Cat Man Do', with sound by TANDEM in-house sound designer Russell Pay.

Simon received the award for Best Comedy at the 2008 British Animation Awards for 'Cat-Man-Do', and TANDEM helped develop this as the first in the Simon's Cat series of films. Based on Simon's observations of his own cats and incorporating his unique comedy timing and graphic simplicity, this film became a huge success on the internet through TANDEM’s newly created YouTube channel, and sparked the production of further films in the series.

His second Simon's Cat film, 'Let Me In!', had 7 million hits on the dedicated Simon's Cat YouTube channel, while the latest, 'TV Dinner', premiered on the Culture show (BBC 2) in July 2008 before going ‘live’ on the YouTube channel that same night: it immediately gained millions of downloads and achieved YouTube’s ‘most viewed’ and ‘most favourited’ global honours. www.youtube.com/simonscat

To November 2008, the channel has achieved over 18 million downloads of the three films - and 57,000 subscribers - and as a result has won the Google 'Blockbuster' award in recognition of their popularity.

Simon is a director of Simon’s Cat Ltd along with Mike Bell, Nigel Pay and Daniel Greaves.
