Nick Lane shortlisted for the Royal Soc. Prize for Science

Life Ascending: The Ten Great Inventions of Evolution by Nick Lane is one of six books that has been shortlisted for the Royal Society Prize for Science 2010.

The judges said: “An elegant and adventurous step-by-step guide to what
makes life the way it is. With a pleasing overarching structure, it is
a beautifully written book and an extremely rewarding read.”

The Royal Society is a fellowship of 1400 outstanding individuals who
represent all areas of science, engineering and medicine and who form a
global scientific network of the highest calibre. The winner of the
£10,000 prize will be announced at a ceremony at the Royal Society on
21st of October. The authors of each shortlisted book will receive
£1000.

Life Ascending is the only book on evolution to have made the shortlist, despite last year being Darwin's Bicentennial.
