Romeo & Juliet

Rupert Goold is now Associate Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company. His first production stars Sam Troughton and Maria Gale as Romeo and Juliet. It runs at The Courtyard Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon from 12 March to 27 August 2010.

“This is a play that, rightfully, belongs to youth. And
there is a headlong, impetuous quality about Rupert Goold's new RSC production
that chimes exactly with the spirit of the play. I can't recall as exciting a
revival since Zeffirelli stunned us with his verismo in 1960.” **** Michael Billington,
The Guardian

“The action has a stamping, roaring, mega-belligerency
... it's gripping, coherent and detailed.” Susannah
Clapp, The Observer

“This Romeo and Juliet possesses all the customary
imagination and verve of director Rupert Goold. Alive to the shades and
textures of the play, it’s an alluring interpretation — and arrestingly
stylised ... Goold’s sense of theatre is strong, and the result is a Romeo and
Juliet that positively bristles with invention and bold ideas.” **** Henry
Hitchings, The Evening Standard

**** Benedict
Nightingale, The Sunday Times

“An outstanding evening.” **** Michael
Coveney, The Independent

“Oustanding staging ... I envy young audiences seeing it for
the first time.” **** Charles
Spencer, The Telegraph

“Rupert Goold’s production is like a prolonged earthquake
... a thrilling, stormy production, deeply felt but unsentimental: the RSC at
its unpredictable best.” **** John
Peters, Sunday Times
