Nominated for his performance of one of drama’s most prestigious leading roles, X-Men star McAvoy was acclaimed for his commanding performance as the power-hungry Scottish Lord in Jamie Lloyd’s gritty take on Shakespeare’s bloody drama.

Best Actress - Hattie Morahan for A Doll's House

Morahan won plaudits for her appearance as iconic Nora in Ibsen’s classic. An Olivier win would mark an awards hat-trick for the actress, having already won Evening Standard and Critics’ Circle Awards for her electric performance.

Best Actor in a Musical - Will Young for Cabaret

Making his debut in a West End musical Young transformed into an almost inhuman, schizophrenic, unnerving Emcee for Rufus Norris’ production of Cabaret.

Best Musical revival - Cabaret starring Will Young & Michelle Ryan

Rufus Norris’ production proved it had lost none of its punch when it returned with an accomplished Will Young as the eccentric Emcee and Michelle Ryan as the iconic Sally Bowles leading the story of debauchery.

Jonathan Kent's production of Sweeny Todd

Jonathan Church’s critically acclaimed production starred nominees Michael Ball and Imelda Staunton as the bloodthirsty demon barber and pie-loving Mrs Lovett, and entranced audiences with its suitably dark and grimy take on Sondheim’s classic.

Best Revival - Macbeth starring James McAvoy

The first production of Jamie Lloyd’s Trafalgar Transformed season, this Macbeth was a dirty, grimy affair set in a post-apocalyptic world where warriors wielded whatever they could find and witches wore gas masks

The most prestigious awards in British theatre have been celebrating London’s outstanding productions, performers and creatives since 1976. In 2013, the glamorous, star-studded ceremony, which will crown award winners, showcase incredible performances and feature very special appearances, returns to the illustrious Royal Opera House on 28 April.
