The Baroness Orczy was born in 1865 to Baron Felix Orczy, and spent her early years on his vast estates in Hungary. After a violent revolt by farm workers the family moved to London where the Baroness grew up. She attended the London School of Art in Kensington where she met her future husband Montague Barstow. Together they led a fashionable and semi-bohemian lifestyle as illustrators for magazines before she discovered she had a talent for writing. She wrote many stories and novels in her lifetime but it was The Scarlet Pimpernel that made her name. The novel has been adapted for film, television, radio and stage. The Baroness died in Monaco in 1947
