Emma Hemingford is a writer and actor. Her first play Flinch, which she also co-starred in, premiered at the Old Red Lion in 2019 to four four-star reviews. It was described by The Guardian as a ‘promising debut that gets under the skin of a troubled relationship’ and by the The Stage as ‘light on its feet and appealingly playful’. Its national tour took place in November 2021.
Emma’s play Foreverland – a dystopian drama exploring the future of biotechnology – was shortlisted for The Papatango Prize 2021 and opened at the Southwark Playhouse in October 2024. It received twelve four-star reviews and was described by Michael Billington as 'one of the best new shows in London' and by The Stage as a 'Black Mirror-esque dystopian existential drama which fascinatingly explores the ramifications of anti-ageing science and eternal life.'
Her play Afterwards was shortlisted for The Alpine Fellowship 2021. Afterwards is a post-apocalyptic thriller about a group of refugees fleeing Britain. Emma was awarded a Playwriting Fellowship by the Institute of Advanced Study in Budapest to complete this play in residence.
Emma is currently under commission to Empire Street Productions. She is also developing a magical middle-grade adventure with the Penguin WriteNow programme, and working on several screenwriting projects. As an actor she is represented by TTA.
