Hugh has been designing lighting for over 40 years, working extensively for the RSC, National Theatre, Donmar Warehouse, Almeida, Royal Court and Hampstead Theatres as well as commercial producers including Robert Fox, Cameron Mackintosh, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Colin Ingram, and since 2015 as an associate at The Old Vic. His work has been seen internationally, particularly in New York where he has more than 20 Broadway credits.
Career highlights include The Deep Blue Sea (Northcott, Exeter 1982), She Stoops to Conquer (Crucible, Sheffield, 1989) Richard III, The Taming of the Shrew, Romeo and Juliet (RST Stratford, 1995) Peter Pan (Leeds Playhouse 1995), Art (Wyndham’s, 1996), Tanz der Vampire (Raimund, Vienna 1997 – still touring in Europe), The Blue Room (Donmar, then Cort NYC), The Graduate (Gielgud, 2000), Spamalot (Shubert, Chicago 2004), Mary Stuart (Donmar, 2005), Matilda (RSC Courtyard, 2010), A Christmas Carol (Old Vic, 2017).
Hugh has worked for directors including (in order of first occurrence) Steven Pimlott, Matthew Warchus, Terry Johnson, Roger Michel, Phyllida Lloyd, Patrick Marber, Roman Polanski, Sam Mendes, Ian Rickson, John Crowley, Nicholas Hytner, Trevor Nunn, Howard Davies, Mike Nichols, Jerry Zaks, Peter Gill, Dominic Cooke, Anna Mackmin, David Leveaux, Josie Rourke, Baz Luhrmann, Joe Mantello, Blanche MacIntryre, Casey Nicholaw, Jonathan Kent, Richard Eyre, Matthew Bourne and Kathleen Marshall.
Awards include three Olivier Awards, two Tony Awards and a Molière Award.
