Jeff James is a theatre director, writer and dramaturg. Originally from Leeds, he is now based in London.
He has directed plays at the Young Vic, Nottingham Playhouse, Manchester Royal Exchange, Rose Theatre Kingston, the Yard and Dailes Theatre in Riga.
Recent productions include Nina Segal’s new play Shooting Hedda Gabler at the Rose Theatre in Kingston and his own play Winter’s Tale (after Shakespeare) which he directed for Dailes Theatre Riga.
Other writing includes an adaptation of Jane Austen’s Persuasion (with James Yeatman) and Stink Foot, a new version of Philoctetes by Sophocles.
As dramaturg, he frequently collaborates with the choreographers Jess and Morgs, including on Coppélia for Scottish Ballet, which won Best Classical Choreography at the Critics’ Circle National Dance Awards 2023.
He has been associate director on seven of Ivo van Hove's productions, including A View from the Bridge, A Little Life and Hedda Gabler.
