ALLELUJAH! opens at the Bridge Theatre
Written by Alan Bennett, directed by Nicholas Hytner, and with music arranged by George Fenton, ‘Allelujah!’ opened last night at the Bridge Theatre to excellent reviews.
Set in the geriatric ward of a Yorkshire hospital threatened with closure, ‘Allelujah!’ follows the lives of its elderly residents and the doctors who care for them as they fight to save “the Beth,” from NHS cuts. Trying to raise some publicity for the cause, the chairman of the Bethlehem hospital trust invites in a camera crew to make a documentary featuring the ward’s resident choir. A rich milieu of dreams and dramas allows the ward to become a “sharp, funny, subversively political…microcosm of modern society.” – Michael Billington, The Guardian
“…we are reminded anew of the singular mix of generosity and perversity that make Mr. Bennett one of the most original and invaluable of playwrights” – Ben Brantley, New York Times
“A quietly furious attack on Britain’s culture of uncaring” – Andrzej Lukowski, Timeout
“Just what the doctor ordered” – Dominic Cavendish, The Telegraph
