FENCES opens in the West End
Paulette Randall’s production of August Wilson’s Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winning play, FENCES, has now opened in the West End, starring Lenny Henry as Troy Maxson, with Ashley Zhangazha as his supressed son, Cory; the cast having been assembled by casting director Briony Barnett.
Marking the first play to be directed by a black woman in the West End, it will play at the Duchess Theatre until Saturday 14th September and tickets can be bought here.
Paulette Randall's finely calibrated production also contains good performances from Ashley Zhangazha as the son desperately trying to carve out his own life.
Guardian ****
a beautifully judged and bruisingly powerful revival by Paulette Randall
Independent ****
Director Paulette Randall locates the play’s emotional core.
Evening Standard ****
Randall’s beautifully paced direction of this sprawling drama echoes the narrative pace of the blues: expansive, but urgent.
The cast is uniformly excellent
Telegraph ****
Paulette Randall's production, which certainly matches the British premiere in 1990 starring Yaphet Kotto as Troy and Adrian Lester as Cory, gives Henry the best possible support.
excellent work of Zhangazha
