ROOM at the Theatre Royal Stratford East

ROOM, an adaptation of Emma Donoghue's novel of the same name, opened this week at the Theatre Royal to critical acclaim. Directed by Cora Bissett and with set and costume design by Lily Arnold and lighting design by David Plater, ROOM tells the story of a mother and her five-year-old son being held captive in her abductor’s garden shed. 

Ann Treneman writes, in The Times, "The set, by Lily Arnold, is a thing of genius: the room is populated by a thousand objects, but dominated by a small bed and wardrobe. Sometimes, the room rotates, so we can see it from the back — inside the wardrobe, where Little/Big Jack confides in us. Sometimes, the action is overladen by screen projections of drawings, images of Jack’s imagination."

Paul Vale writes, in The Stage, “The stunning visual design combines Lily Arnold's hypnotic set with Andrzej Goulding's inspired digital projections to further animate Jack's world.”

ROOM will play at the Theatre Royal, Straftod East until 3rd June, after which it will transfer to the Abbey Theatre in Dublin and the Birmingham Rep.
