THE VILLAGE BIKE rides into Sheffield
Penelope Skinner’s award-winning play, THE VILLAGE BIKE, has received its regional Premiere at Sheffield Theatres in a production directed by Jonathan Humphreys with a cast that features Caroline Harker and David Bark-Jones.
The play originally played at the Royal Court last summer where it had a twice-extended, sell-out run, and won the George Devine Award, the Charles Wintour Most Promising Playwright Award (Evening Standard Theatre awards) and an Olivier Nomination for Outstanding Achievement in an Affiliate Theatre.
Penelope Skinner's very funny play that echoes Terry Johnson’s work in its facility for using popular form and stereotypes to explore serious issues and unhappiness.
Meanwhile, Caroline Harker provides good support as Jenny, the apparent earth mother who is terrified of her own children.
Skinner knows exactly what she's doing with form and does it with gleeful, freewheeling verve.
Jonathan Humphreys' impeccably acted production
Guardian ****
Jonathan Humphreys's production is splendidly performed.
Sunday Times Culture ****
Skinner’s play is a tightly written delight, one that neatly reverses stereotypical gender roles.
David Bark-Jones is both charismatic and ever so slightly sociopathic as Becky’s lover Oliver
Director Jonathan Humphreys has transformed the Crucible’s Studio into a traverse space, which proves an inspired move: making voyeurs of the audience and creating a disorientating sense of intimacy.

The production will play in the Crucible Studio until Saturday 6th October and tickets can be bought here.
