Richmal Crompton, the creator of JUST WILLIAM stories, was born in Lancashire in 1890. The first story about William Brown appeared in Home magazine in 1919, and the first collection of WILLIAM stories was published in book form three years later. Much less famous than WILLIAM but no less charming, her stories about another character named JIMMY first appeared in the Star newspaper in February 1947, followed by the publication of two collections JUST JIMMY AND JUST JIMMY AGAIN in 1951.As well as many books of short stories and several novels for adults, in all, thirty-eight WILLIAM books were published, the last one in 1970, after Richmal Crompton’s death.

Richmal Crompton (15 November 1890 – 11 January 1969) is the author of the popular 'Just William' series.
William first appeared in 'Rice-Mould' in a 1919 edition of House Magazine, and Crompton's first collection, 'Just-William', appeared 3 years later in 1922. 'More William' followed later that year, with 'William Again' in 1923.
Between 1919 and 1970 Richmal Crompton published 38 collections of Just William stories. The books have been translated and enjoyed around the world and have been adapted into hugely popular stage plays, television and radio series.
Crompton also wrote 42 novels and 9 volumes of short stories for adults between 1923 and 1960.
