this rollicking piece of gig theatre, written by Ellen Brammar ... shines in its humour ... the show bubbles over with charisma

The Guardian on Modest (Kiln Theatre)

★ ★ ★ ★
The show’s real success is in portraying the lives of those [Elizabeth Thompson] inspired but for whom existing is hard – the Bessies and Franceses. They are the real stars. And in today’s world, the ones still struggling.

WhatsOn Stage on Modest

★ ★ ★ ★
Brammar’s exceptional piece ... uses a potent mix of drag, searing comedy, indignant fury and tenderness to explore the real-life artist’s history and highlight its contradictions.

The Stage on Modest
