OPEN WATER is shortlisted for Waterstones Book of the Year 2021

We are absolutely thrilled that Caleb Azumah Nelson's debut novel OPEN WATER has been shortlisted for the Waterstones Book of the Year 2021!

Since it was first introduced in 2012, Waterstones Book of the Year has become an institution, recognised by readers as a highlight of the calendar and a benchmark of true literary excellence. Nominated by our booksellers, recent winners have included Maggie O’Farrell’s Hamnet, Sally Rooney’s Normal People and The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse by Charlie Mackesy. As we continue to navigate these extraordinary times, this year’s shortlist reflects a deep desire to return to the primacy of storytelling. Whether through inspired recastings of ancient myth and excavations of British folklore, insightful global histories viewed through the enlightening prism of cities and plants or by tracing the creative evolution of a popular music titan through the tales behind his lyrics, these thirteen magnificent books all find vibrant new ways to bring essential stories to electrifying life.

Luke Taylor, Waterstones retail director, said: “With such a strong year for publishing it was always going to be an incredible selection of titles that would make up our Book of the Year shortlist and, as in previous years, the nominations from our booksellers are eclectic and diverse. The final 13 that make up this year’s list are a true reflection of our booksellers’ passion for sharing outstanding books with readers. It is an extraordinarily exciting list, and one that should provide many with a welcome relief after the last 18 months.”

The Waterstones Book of the Year 2021 will be chosen by a Waterstones panel and announced on 2nd December.
