Mai spent her early childhood in Vietnam and remains fascinated by Indochinese history and culture. In 2021, she was chosen for the Cornerstone’s Elevate Programme, and in 2020 was runner-up in the MsLexia Short Story Competition (MEE GORENG), short-listed for the Penguin Random House WriteNow Programme and long-listed for the BBC Drama Submission Window.
She was recently shortlisted for the 2022 Joffe Books Prize for her novel-in-progress, THE SMILING MANDARIN.
