UA Clients Longlisted for the Carnegie Medal 2023

We are delighted to announce that several UA clients have been longlisted for the Yoto Carnegie Medals for writing and Illustration. The longlists were chosen from 125 nominations, which includes 12 children’s and youth librarians from the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals’ (CILIP) Youth Libraries Group.

In the writing category, we have The Blackthorn Branch by Elen Caldecott (Andersen) and The Silver Chain by Jion Sheibani (Hot Key). The Blackthorn Branch is a magical, atmospheric adventure with Welsh folklore woven throughout, about a young boy lured into the underworld by Fair Folk disguised as everyday children, and his sister Cassie, who must find him. The Silver Chain is a beautifully illustrated coming-of-age verse novel, centring on Azadeh, a budding violinist on a music scholarship at an expensive private school. When everything starts to unravel around her, she finds solace in music.

In the illustration category, Journey to the Last River by Teddy Keen and the Unknown Adventurer (Frances Lincoln), a thrilling tale of a voyage into the Amazon rainforest that looks exactly like a real scrap book inside, with smudged pages, handwritten-looking text and even die-cut piranha bite marks from a previous scrape.

Congratulations to all those longlisted! The shortlist will be announced on Friday 17th March.
