Jean Kalman, born in Paris in 1945,  has worked extensively as a designer and lighting designer and visual artist for dance, theatre and opera since 1979. He has collaborated for stage productions with directors such as Peter Brook, Lev Dodin, Deborah Warner, Richard Eyre, Robert Carsen, Adrian Noble,  Pierre Audi, dancers and choreographers such as Kazuo Ohno, Min Tanaka, Kim Brandstrup, Arno Schuitemaker, visual artists as Karel Appel, Richard Serra, Georg Baselitz, Iannis Kounellis, Anish Kapoor, Jonathan Meese and composers as Mauricio Kagel and Heiner Goebbels, Misato Mochizuki, Frank Krawczyk.  With Christian Boltanski he co-conceived a number of memorable installations.

He has a longstanding collaboration with Deborah Warner which started in 1989 with the National Theatre production of The Good Person of Sichuan.

Awards include an Olivier Award for Richard III and White Chameleon, Evening Standard Award for Festen and a Green Room Award for Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk
