Author of various award-winning works, Ruth began writing as a newspaper and magazine journalist in England and Kenya before becoming a student at the National Film School.  There she scripted several productions including SWITCH OFF, which she also directed, and was seen at the Edinburgh, Berlin and Budapest Film Festivals and later transmitted on Southern Television.

 

Her work for television and films includes the five part period drama JONI JONES for S4C, awarded Best Children's series, Chicago Film Festival and the Grand Prize, Gijon Film Festival in Spain. JONI JONES was seen on Channel 4, S4C and later on BBC-2 as well as being sold to many other countries. The series was subsequently shown in the USA in as a single film.

 

The well received AND PIGS MIGHT FLY was shown on S4C, Channel 4 and at the London Film Festival. It won Best Children's programme at Chicago Film Festival and the Grand Prize in Gijon, Spain among other awards.

 

Her film COMING UP ROSES, a co-production between S4C and Red Rooster, had a theatrical release in the UK and USA. It was shown at many international film festivals, including London and Cannes where it was selected for the 'Un Certain Regard' category and at Vevey, where it won The Pierrot Prize.

 

Ruth’s play WOMEN OF THE DUST, commissioned by Tamasha Theatre Company, received a national tour, including a London run, in 1993. This production has also toured in India and was short-listed for the 1993 Meyer-Whitworth Award for New Theatre Writing.  Ruth also adapted the play for Radio-4 and this was transmitted twice in 1994. Her latest collaboration with Tamasha, A YEARNING, based on Lorca's YERMA, opened at the Lyric Hammersmith before setting off on a nationwide tour. This play was adapted for BBC Radio by Ruth and was transmitted in 1998. Her radio play IN CARE was commissioned by the BBC and was also transmitted in that year.

 

Ruth's highly acclaimed four part adaptation of FAMILY MONEY by Nina Bawden was transmitted on Channel 4. Her eight part series THE HELLO GIRLS was transmitted on BBC1 and went to a second series.
