Nathan Ellis' INSTRUCTIONS at the Edinburgh Fringe

Every day a different unrehearsed performer takes to the stage, ready to receive instructions. Line-by-line a story unfolds, and a life unspools.

Nathan Ellis’ brilliant new play INSTRUCTIONS has received some wonderful reviews after its first week showing at the Edinburgh Fringe. Building on the success of his experimental piece WORK.TXT (a play without actors), INSTRUCTIONS is about AI, creativity and the dying days of capitalism, and it is performed by a different unrehearsed actor every day. As the play goes on, the borders between reality and fiction begin to blur.

Sally Stott in gave INSTRUCTIONS 4* in The Scotsman, calling the play ‘electrifying’ and describing Nathan’s writing as ‘distinctive, exhilarating and unique’, while in another 4* review for The Stage, Anya Ryan called the play ‘fascinating’: ‘Part play, part theatrical experiment and part commentary on the relationship between actor and director, Instructions by Nathan Ellis pushes the boundaries of art and life’.

Mark Harding declared INSTRUCTIONS a ‘must-see’ in his 5* review in Broadway Baby, saying that ‘this incredible show’ is both ‘mind-bogglingly thought-provoking’ but ‘also a lot of fun’. While Claire Wood responded with similar warmth in her 4* review for The Wee Review.

INSTRUCTIONS is running until 26th August and tickets can be purchased here. Don’t miss it!
