Richard Aczel was born in Beckenham, Kent, and studied English and Philosophy at the University of York. He wrote his PhD on Hungarian Literature at the University of London and has translated Hungarian fiction by, among others, Dezső Kosztolányi and Péter Esterházy. He teaches English literature at the University of Cologne where he also writes for and directs the theatre company Port in Air.
