Richard Hudson was born in Zimbabwe in 1954, and was educated in Zimbabwe and England. He trained at Wimbledon School of Art. He is the President of the Society of British Stage Designers, and a Royal Designer for Industry (RDI) 1999. In 1988 he won a Laurence Olivier Award for the season at the Old Vic. His set designs for The Lion King have won numerous awards including a Tony in 1998, the Critics Circle Design Award in 2000, and both the Ovations Award and the Hollywood NAACP Award for Best Set Design in 2001. In 2003 he won The Gold Medal for Set Design at the Prague Quadrienale. In 2005 he received an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Surrey, and in 2009 he was made a Companion of the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts. In 2010 he was made an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.
