Tom Nicoll was born in Dundee and studied computing at the University of Dundee. Appropriately, he then went on to become a person who programs computers for a living. Or 'computer programmer' as he likes to call it. He has always been drawn towards stories though, whether it's books, TV shows, movies, music, comics, video games or just some guy on a bus shouting in his ear. He has been assembling his own words on pages, or 'writing' as he likes to call it, since he was at school. The older he gets the sillier his writing seems to become. He grows ever more concerned that one day his work will consist entirely of cryptic squiqqles on etch-a-sketches. For now though he writes funny books for children.

He currently lives just outside Edinburgh with his wife, daughter and a non-dog called Noddy. Or a 'cat' as he likes to call it.

THERE'S A DRAGON IN MY POPCORN (Stripes, 4th May 2017)

Inspired by the latest Slug Man movie, Eric and Pan decide to enter a competition for young filmmakers on the theme of superheroes. Naturally, the Mini-Dragon has a real talent for scriptwriting. If only they had something better to make their film on than Mum’s dodgy old mobile…

Then Toby from next door steps in and offers to lend Eric some new kit – on the condition that he can be the producer. Before long, Toby takes over completely, sacking Eric’s friends from the lead roles, doing a complete rewrite of the script and hiring a team of pros to get the film finished. Eric says he wants nothing more to do with the project and, with only a couple of days before the screening, there’s no time to start again.

But Pan secretly works behind the scenes to bring Eric’s original vision to life. Eric’s film goes down a storm at the screening, with Pan stealing the show as a giant fire-breathing dragon. Eric bags the award for best special effects, while a furious Toby walks away with nothing.

When Sam agrees to take his little sister, Lexie, to see the world’s most popular boy band, Apocalips, he expects it to be bad. But he doesn’t expect to get locked in a cupboard, to overhear the band plotting to destroy the world and to witness them disintegrate one of their own members. When no one believes him but his best friend, Milo, Sam is left with no option but to take part in a contest to join the band to try and save the world from Armageddon. To do this Sam will have to become someone he’s never been before. With help from Milo and Lexi, he’ll have to overcome the Four Horsewomen of the Apocalypse, pop Svengali Nigel Cruul, a dodgy haircut, and his complete inability to sing or dance. Still, it’s not the end of the world. Not yet anyway.
