Andrew Upton is an Australian playwright, screenwriter, producer and director.

He completed a Diploma of Art in Dramatic Art in Sydney, majoring in directing. Before moving to London, he worked in continuity for several features, and as Second Unit Director for Australian television. He also directed two Writers' Studios at the Australian National Playwrights' Centre (1995 & 1996), and went on to write the screenplay for 2007 horror feature 'Gone'.

Andrew’s theatre work includes adaptations of Bulgakov’s ‘The White Guard’, and other plays by Chekov, Ibsen, and Gorky for London’s Royal National Theatre and the Sydney Theatre Company.  Hi own original stage play ‘Riflemind’ starred Hugo Weaving and was directed by Philip Seymour Hoffman in its London production. Andrew directed numerous projects for theatres across Sydney, and London, and in 2008, Andrew embarked on a five-year term as the Artistic Director of the Sydney Theatre Company.

Alongside his wife Cate Blanchett, Andrew set up production company Dirty Films to develop features, following their short film ‘Bangers’. Upton has gone on to executive produce feature films acclaimed internationally, including 2015’s ‘Carol’ starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, which picked up a nomination for six Oscars, five Golden Globes, and nine BAFTAs. More recently, Andrew produced ‘Fingernails’ starring Riz Ahmed and Jessie Buckley.
