Michelle Magorian trained at The Rose Bruford College of Theatre and Performance for three years followed by a year at Marcel Marceau's L'École Internationale de Mime in Paris. She has a post graduate certificate in Film Studies (BFI/London University), was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from Portsmouth University in 2005, made a Fellow of Rose Bruford College in 2013, and has twice been nominated for the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award (20018/19). While she was a student, she wrote plays and poetry and continued to write alongside her acting work, (Equity name Mikki Magorian). As well as appearing in dramas and comedies in repertory theatres and in London ( from A Collier's Friday Night, Danton's Death and Faust to The Norman Conquests, Abigail's Party and Rookery Nook), she has played a variety of roles in musicals and was asked to play Cicely Courtneidge performing on a London stage in the TV series Lillie. It was while she was working at the Northcott Theatre, writing on Sundays between rehearsing and performing six days and six nights a week, that she completed her first draft of Goodnight Mister Tom. This led her to her other novels.
