Pai Hsieh-yung was born in 1937 in Guilin. He is described as one of ‘the most important writers in contemporary Chinese and world literature’ and a ‘melancholy pioneer’. He grew up with a father who was a KMT general, gained an MA at the Iowa Writer’s Workshop, and was a professor of Chinese Literature at UC Santa Barbara.
