Stephanie read English and Drama at the University of Birmingham and trained at Drama Studio London and the Royal Academy of Music.
Stephanie’s debut play Joy, is currently in development as a feature film with the BFI. Now titled “Girl Almighty”.
Stephanie’s next play Alkaline premiered at the Park Theatre in July 2018.
Stephanie’s next play Juniper and Jules (first run at Theatre 503 in March 2018) was the first Show of the Week at the Vault Festival in January 2019. Focusing on a romantic relationship between two women – one lesbian, one bisexual, “Juniper and Jules” centres on scarcely seen themes; non-monogamy in a complex but positive light, bisexual identity, and the LGBTQ+ community. “Juniper and Jules” transferred to Soho Theatre, May 2022 (delayed for two years due to the pandemic)
Stephanie wrote and developed “Rage, but Hope” The play premiered at Summerhall, Edinburgh Festival 2019 before transferring to the Streatham Space Project. Stephanie was invited to speak at Oxford University on the relationship between contemporary theatre and climate change.
Stephanie was recently commissioned to write a short play for Shakespeare’s Globe. “Letter to Bathsheba” was part of the “Notes to Forgotten She Wolves” season. The “She Wolves” project involved female contemporary writers addressing women from history whose stories have been previously silenced.
Recent work has included a commission from Soho Theatre for a new play co-written with Dior Clarke and award nominated "Thirsty" at Vault Festival 2023.
Praise for Joy
The Times “An irrepressible, swaggering spirit that sweeps you along with it and leaves you glowing”
Time Out “glows with easy affection” “there’s a delicate tenderness”
The Stage “engaging and thought-provoking”
★★★★★ 'Beautifully crafted, unsentimental and real.' SpyInTheStalls
★★★★ ''Joy is a heart warming story about family having to let their children grow up and go out in to the world.' West End Wilma
Praise for Alkaline:
The Guardian “poetic and powerful” Stephanie Martin’s drama – part comedy of manners and part state-of-the-nation play – is one killer scene short of greatness"
Entertainment Focus "This was a brilliant effect, a true moment of smart theatre. Frustrating because this brave choice suggests there’s the possibility of more theatrical games from writer Martin...This is sit-forward, lean-in theatre. It’s provocative with a small ‘p’"
Praise for Juniper and Jules
The Guardian - "this funny and sweet romance is a must-see, featuring scintillating performances, Stephanie Martin’s play sidesteps schmaltz with bold and sharply original verve. there is so much zest and freshness in Stephanie Martin’s funny, sweet and quietly radical script that this couple’s story feels entirely unique, their dialogue staying sharp and original."
The Stage - "But most distinctive is the play’s unusual attention to the practical, unglamorous detail of polyamory, which is treated with sympathy and coolness, as the two barter over information and rules, drawn closer or driving each other away...Sex between an unwavering lesbian and a “straight” girl proves a bountiful beginning point for Stephanie Martin’s Juniper and Jules, which explores – with both refreshing and sobering clarity – the hard work of a relationship."
